Jupiter and Earth Size Comparison

4 min readSources: NASAMeasurement notes

Jupiter is about 11 times wider than Earth. Its volume is about 1,300 times Earth’s, and its mass is about 318 times Earth’s. Width, volume and mass describe different properties.

Earth and Jupiter use equatorial diameters, with Jupiter’s 2026 Juno revision. Circles represent the stated diameters; they are not photographs. Space between them is for readability.

How big is Jupiter?

Jupiter is about 143,000 kilometres across at the equator. It bulges around the middle, so its polar diameter is smaller. An average diameter uses another definition and gives another value.

For the diagram above, we use the 2026 Juno equatorial measurement: 142,976 km. Earth’s equatorial diameter is 12,756.2 km. Dividing like by like gives about 11.21 Earth widths.

Width, volume and mass are different comparisons

Rounded comparisons from NASA reference data
PropertyJupiter / EarthWhat it compares
DiameterAbout 11×Distance across each planet
VolumeAbout 1,300×Three-dimensional space enclosed
MassAbout 318×Amount of matter

The volume figure is a volume equivalence. It does not mean 1,300 rigid Earth-sized balls can be packed inside Jupiter with no gaps. And 318 times the mass does not mean 318 times the width.

Why do websites give different diameters?

Equatorial, polar and volume-mean diameters answer slightly different questions. NASA’s traditional reference table gives Jupiter an equatorial diameter of 142,984 km and a volume-mean diameter of 139,822 km. Those two figures describe different dimensions.

A small 2026 revision

Juno observations led to an estimate about 8 km narrower at the equator and 24 km narrower at the poles than the older values. That refinement matters for precise models; “about eleven Earth widths” remains a useful everyday comparison.

What does the Sun look like beside Jupiter?

Jupiter dominates this comparison, but it looks much smaller next to our star. Compare the Sun, Jupiter and Earth on one scale.

A little more perspective

How many Earths fit across Jupiter?

About eleven Earth diameters fit across Jupiter’s equatorial diameter. This is a width comparison, not a packing calculation.

Does this diagram show the distance between the planets?

No. It compares size only. The space between the circles is chosen so both labels and shapes are easy to see.

Which Jupiter diameter does the game use?

Read the measurement label in the Universe planet size game. Each question names its diameter convention, and the source note identifies the value used for scoring.
